| PI Metric Reporting-Where's the Variation? |
The rapid growth and proliferation
of managed care organizations in the healthcare industry
has caused many public health agencies, providers, employers
and consumers to question the quality of healthcare and
the consequences for patient safety. The mantra for healthcare
quality can be categorized into one simple statement;
predictable quality at a predictable cost. Webster defines
"predict" as "to declare or indicate in advance...foretell
on the basis of observation, experience or scientific
reason." With so many dashboards available today, what's
the big deal? All reporting platforms provide us with
the needed information to "predict quality." Pick one
and you're good to go...right?

| Rare Events in Healthcare |
Rare
events in healthcare can pose a daunting issue with Quality
Professionals particularly in deciding how to monitor
them with SPC charts. There are many examples of rare
event data in healthcare including Medication Errors,
Patient falls, Nosocomial Infections, Surgical Complications
and VAP events all representing important measures. Because
these events occur so infrequently, conventional charts
exhibit problems with them.

| Root Cause Analysis-A Key Tool for
Process Improvement |
Root Cause Analysis (RCA) is a valuable tool for understanding
and gaining insight into process outcomes. When applied
appropriately, RCA can illuminate targets for change and
may generate testable hypotheses. The use of RCA is extremely
useful, as it lends a formal structure to efforts to learn
from past mistakes.
A key to making RCA a productive endeavor is to make
it easily accessible to those responsible for specific
processes (the Process Experts). While unpredictable variation
is best identified using an SPC chart, the sources of
this variation will need root cause analysis for identification
that leads to actions to eliminate or minimize these causes.
The Process Experts need to be able to see the high level
picture (Score Card and SPC trend over time) and then
be able to explore the contributing factors in a variety
of ways. This investigation needs to be very flexible
AND easy to use.

| New Subscription Model Pricing for
Performance Improvement Solution |
The essence of a good transaction is one in which both
parties find mutual success. Through our focus groups and
Statit piMD customers,
we have gained incredible insight into the value our solution
provides. Statit piMD uncovers unpredictable variation using
process behavior charts and includes dashboards and scorecards
of key performance measures. Profit is integrally connected
to the quality of the key performance measures within your
organization. Statit piMD helps you identify areas of weakness
in these processes by presenting "pictures" of quality and
give you interactivity with these pictures to create corrective
actions and ultimately, greater performance: measures can
then monitor the improvements implemented and ultimately,
can be used to correlate organizational, clinical and financial
performance. Statit piMD makes your decision making process
better and your bottom line greater.

| Customizing the
Default Appearance of Statit piMD™ |
A powerful yet often overlooked
feature of Statit piMD is its customizability, and the
simplicity of implementing these changes. Any user designated
as a Statit piMD administrator has the power to edit the
default properties used by the system through simple,
web based forms. These properties can be used to customize
output sizes, labels, default values, etc. Following is
a brief discussion of some of the more common output elements
that users typically modify. If you are not already familiar
with Statit piMD, we recommend you view
our 10 minute guided tour to familiarize yourself
with the output discussed in this article.

| Behind the Scenes-HTML Templates |
Statit piMD is an extremely
robust and flexible tool, so much so that there are many
customizations that a system administrator may do that
the normal user does not immediately see. Most of these
customizations are available through the System Properties
or piMD Properties, but a few are changes that get made
directly on the server. One such change is the ability
for the System Administrator to modify the presentation
of the Indicator output through an HTML template.
These templates control the presentation
of many of the different output screens that get generated
in Statit piMD. Among these screens
are the Dashboard, Indicator trend output, comparison trend
output, process phase analysis, and thumbnail output screens. The Indicator
trend and comparison trend outputs have separate templates
for viewable and printable output which allows System Administrators
to further customize their output.
