Act Now to Process Changes

In order to truly make process improvements, you must investigate, take action, and document when nonconformities or non-normal variation are detected in your processes. A key element in achieving this operational excellence is to identify the sources of variation that affect your process, product or service. Once identified, these key sources can then be earmarked for attention.

The road to process improvement is achieved through production visibility and the implementation of a more immediate and interactive Statistical Process Control (SPC) system. Statit e-QC is a web-based SPC application that allows the user, in real-time, to earmark any special cause variation that may have some assignable cause, as well as document and track changes made to a process. Instead of having control plans displayed on paper process sheets out on the floor, users can enforce and analyze these changes through Statit e-QC. Statit e-QC's browser interface, allows users to click on SPC violations and interactively enter the relevant information.

The example below is a report from our online Statit e-QC demo site. This particular report allows the user to perform two very important actions. When the user clicks on the data point "in question", they are provided with the data entry window that allows them to tag that point as an assignable cause and to document any changes to the process.

Example 1

Let's now take a look at the assignable cause feature. Example 2 below shows our control chart after we've tagged the point as an assignable cause and added our comment as to the reason for the excessive variation. In our example here, one of the parts was deficient, "O Ring Bad". You'll notice two key changes to our chart. One, the point has been flagged with a red check mark signifying that there is an assignable cause and two, that point was taken out of the calculations of the control limits. Statit e-QC automatically recalculated the upper and lower control limits as well as the center line.

Example 2

Our report also allows the operator to note where there may have been a change in the process; we call this a "phase". In Example 3 below, by clicking on a data point, the user can add a comment for the new phase. Statit will automatically show a break in the line for where the change occurred and again automatically recalculate the control limits and center line.
