Were you aware that it is possible to
setup automatic login using Statit piMD and
Statit PPR?
Traditionally, a user has logged into Statit's
web-based products by connecting to a manual
login page and supplying a username and password.
Once these credentials were verified, the user
was logged into the system and presented with
their default view. With release 3.5, Statit
Performance Indicator & Management Dashboard
(piMD) introduced the ability to automatically
authenticate users using the "Integrated
Windows Authentication" feature of Internet
Explorer. Users who wish to login automatically
would bookmark a separate login page which when
loaded, handles authentication without any direct
input from the user. Instead, the web browser
will supply the credentials of the Windows user
currently logged into the workstation from which
the application has been accessed. At this point,
the Statit application will first verify that
the supplied credentials belong to a domain
that is authorized to supply these credentials.
Assuming this is true, the supplied username
will then be compared against users in the Statit
piMD or Statit Physician Profile & Review
(PPR) database. If there is a match, the user
is logged in automatically and presented with
their default view.
Another feature that can be selectively enabled
is the ability to automatically log users into
Statit piMD and Statit PPR shared accounts.
Shared accounts are accounts with a restricted
set of permissions intended to be shared among
groups of users who do not require individual
accounts. If enabled, this feature will query
an Active Directory server to find the group
membership of the user who is logging in. Should
an Active Directory group of which the user
is a member match a shared account inside of
the Statit application, the user will be automatically
logged in using this shared account.
In some instances, users may have both an individual
account and be a member of a group that matches
a shared account. In these situations, the user
will be automatically logged in using their
individual account, but will also see links
in the navigation window allowing them to switch
between all authorized accounts with a single
mouse click. The same is true of users who have
no individual account, but are authorized to
login as multiple shared accounts. They will
be logged in as their first matching shared
account, and given links to switch among all
accounts for which they are authorized. Following
is a screenshot showing a sample of these links
in the navigation menu:

Also to be considered is the case of a user
who does not match any individual or shared
accounts. Behavior in this situation can be
controlled by the system administrator. By default,
login will be prohibited and the user will be
presented with a configurable message explaining
why the access was denied, and optionally how
to contact the appropriate person if they believe
they should have access. In the interest of
transparency, some organizations feel that there
are a basic set of performance indicators that
have been designated as public that should be
available to any members of the organization.
As such, a simple configuration change will
allow users with no explicitly defined individual
or group matches to be logged in as a shared
account with very limited read-only permissions.
Finally, it is important to note that using
automatic login functionality does not in any
way preclude the use of the existing manual
login with which users are already familiar.
This is of particular use to more advanced users
of the system who often need to login as special
administrative accounts, or need to login to
a group account of which they are not a member
in order to see a particular view that is being
presented to those users. Having both login
options available can also be useful in situations
where users might be accessing the Statit application
from somewhere other than their own workstation
where they are not the logged in Windows user.
They can always connect to the manual login
page and supply credentials in order to gain
appropriate access to the application.
We hope this overview is helpful in understanding
the automatic login capability of Statit piMD
